Despite the result he would eventually produce, Aditya admits that he was nervous when he arrived in South Africa. The scale of the competition, the unfamiliar surroundings and the responsibility of representing Tanzania all carried their own weight.
“I was really nervous,” he says.
He believed he could perform well. A top-five finish felt possible. He thought he might finish third or second. Winning gold was not the outcome he expected most strongly.
It became the outcome he delivered.
Each round brought a different opponent and a different challenge. The pressure grew, but Aditya kept returning to the same thought: he had trained for this, and his team was depending on him.
“I trained for one month,” he says. “My team expects me. I didn’t want to let them down.”
It was not fear that pushed him forward.
It was responsibility.
